Walk to school week

Join Gloucestershire schools from 18 to 22 May for Walk to School Week, a five-day challenge that encourages pupils to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or Park and Stride on the journey to school.

Make the school run active, fun and rewarding
This year’s Mission Move challenge helps children build healthy habits while learning about road safety, wellbeing, sustainability and the benefits of active travel.

Walk to School Week is a great opportunity for Gloucestershire schools to make active travel part of the school day. Taking place from 18 to 22 May, the challenge encourages pupils to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or Park and Stride to school each day across the week.

This year’s theme, Mission Move, turns the journey to school into a fun five-day challenge, helping children discover how active travel can support mental wellbeing, physical health, safer streets, cleaner air and stronger community connections.

Schools can support the week with classroom packs from Living Streets, which include teacher guidance, a wallchart or pledge poster, daily stickers, 30 pupil activity diaries and end-of-week rewards. Packs are available for KS1 and KS2 and are designed around age-appropriate, curriculum-linked activities.

We are encouraging Gloucestershire schools to get involved in Walk to School Week 2026 and help more families choose active journeys where possible. Whether pupils walk the whole way, wheel, scoot, cycle or Park and Stride for the last part of the trip, every active journey can help reduce congestion outside the school gate and create a healthier start to the day.

Walk to School Week is designed to be inclusive, and children who cannot take part in walking or wheeling journeys can still be involved as ambassadors to help run the challenge in school.
