How can you access the e-bikes?
Anyone aged 18 or over can rent an e-bike through the Pedal Eazy scheme. You will need at least one form of photo ID plus proof of address, and you must be able to ride a bike; if you would like help building your cycling confidence, you can email thinktravel@gloucestershire.gov.uk for support.
To book an e-bike, contact Transition Stroud, Gloucestershire Bike Project or one of the participating library hubs to check availability and arrange your rental. Collections are usually made from an agreed local hub so that the handover is convenient for you.
Rental period and costs
E-bikes are available for hire on a monthly basis for up to 3 months. This gives you enough time to try using an e-bike for commuting, school runs or regular trips before deciding whether to buy.
Current hire rates are:
- Regular rate: £70 per month
- Jobseekers rate: £30 per month
These rates apply through Gloucestershire Bike Project and Transition Stroud under the scheme.
Refundable hire fees – try before you buy
All hire fees can be refunded as a bike voucher on request. This voucher can be used towards purchasing a bike or cycling accessories, making it easier to progress from renting to owning your own e-bike or standard bike.
This try-before-you-buy approach helps remove the financial risk of investing in an e-bike that might not suit your needs.
Who can take part?
The Pedal Eazy Rent Scheme is open to anyone in the Gloucestershire community who:
- Is aged 18 or over
- Can provide photo ID and proof of address
- Is able to ride a bike or is willing to build up their confidence with support
The project is designed to make e-bikes accessible to as many people as possible, including those who might not otherwise be able to afford or justify buying an e-bike upfront.
What are the benefits of using an e-bike?
E-bikes offer a range of practical, environmental and health benefits. They enable people to cycle further and more often, including on hilly routes or longer commutes, by providing electric assistance when needed.
- Sustainability: Much lower emissions than a car journey, helping reduce your carbon footprint.
- Cost savings: Save money on fuel, public transport fares and parking charges.
- Convenience: Avoid traffic queues and reach busy town centres more easily.
- Health and fitness: Get regular exercise with less strain on joints and muscles thanks to the electric motor support.
For many people, e-bikes make cycling a realistic alternative to short car trips, which supports cleaner air and less congestion in local communities.
Current and new locations
The Pedal Eazy Rent Scheme is already operating in parts of Gloucestershire and is expanding to reach more residents. Transition Stroud and Gloucestershire Bike Project lead delivery in their areas, with Churchdown Library and Bishops Cleeve Library joining as local hubs to support Churchdown, Bishops Cleeve and surrounding communities.
These hubs provide local pick-up points and information so that people can access the scheme closer to where they live and work.
Future expansion plans
The Pedal Eazy Rent Scheme is expanding into Churchdown and Tewkesbury Borough, with new locations such as Churchdown Library and Bishops Cleeve Library making it easier for more residents to try e-bikes for everyday journeys. Further locations and additional bikes are planned as funding and local partners allow, broadening the reach of low-carbon travel options across the county.
