Gloucestershire Cycle Spine
The Gloucestershire Cycle Spine is making it easier than ever to travel by bike across the county. Connecting communities from Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham through Gloucester and down to Stroud. It provides safer, more accessible routes for everyday journeys and leisure rides alike.
The cycle spine will support a Greener Gloucestershire and help reduce carbon emissions. It will also enable improvements to public health and wellbeing through active travel and make it easier and safer for people to cycle and walk to work, homes and transport hubs.
In addition, the cycle spine will make cycling and other sustainable travel options more appealing. This will help to get people out of their cars and improve the impact of traffic in the area. The scheme will ultimately provide direct access to over half the county’s population in the most populous Severn Vale region. It also reflects the council’s highest priority cycle and walking scheme, as identified in the Gloucestershire Local transport plan (PDF, 10.6 MB).
The route also offers an alternative to people’s daily commute, connecting communities, public transport hubs, workplaces, places of education, Cheltenham and Gloucester city centres, including Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, University of Gloucestershire campuses and Gloucester college.
