Secure Cycle Parking: Making Cycling Accessible to Everyone in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire County Council is proud to support the Cycle Hangar scheme, a new initiative bringing secure cycle parking to communities across the county. Operated by Cyclehoop, these innovative storage facilities are addressing one of the biggest barriers to cycling: worrying about your bike's safety while you're away from home.

Why Secure Parking Matters

With the rising popularity of e-bikes comes a real concern about security. Modern e-bikes can cost thousands of pounds, and without proper storage, many people simply won't take the risk of cycling to town centres, shops, and train stations. The Cycle Hangar scheme removes that worry, offering secure, covered parking that encourages more people to choose cycling as their go-to transport option.

This is about making active travel a realistic choice for everyone. Whether you're commuting to work, visiting the shops, or catching a train, you can now leave your bike safely while you go about your day.

How It Works

Using the Cycle Hangar scheme is straightforward:

  1. Download the app, set up your account and add credit
  2. Book your space at any of our convenient locations across Gloucestershire
  3. Open the Bikehangar by clicking unlock in the app, turning the latch and opening the door
  4. Park your bike inside and lock it to the locking bar with your own lock
  5. Pay as you go from just 15p per half hour through the app

Each hangar holds six bikes and provides weather protection and security, making it ideal for short to medium-length visits to our town centres and transport hubs.

Promoting Active Travel

This scheme represents a real investment in active travel across Gloucestershire. By making cycling safer and more convenient, we're helping people:

Reduce transport costs by cycling instead of driving or taking other transport
Improve their health through regular physical activity
Reduce emissions and support our environmental goals
Access town centres and public transport more easily

The initiative has been funded through a County Councillor motion, which covers the physical cost of the hangars, with Cheltenham Borough Council providing additional support for Cheltenham's scheme. Cyclehoop's revenue from parking fees (of which Gloucestershire County Council receives 10%) helps keep the service sustainable and allows us to expand across more communities.
